Laser ablation is the process of removing material from a solid surface by irradiating a laser beam, the material is heated by the absorbed laser energy and evaporated or sublimated.
One of the main problems associated with most conventional cleaning technologies is substrate consumption and the negative impact on the environment. Abrasive blasting damages fragile surfaces and generates large quantities of waste. The use of chemical solvents generate liquid waste and potentially dangerous fumes.

The depth of the ablation can be controlled so that selective removal of the coatings is possible. This is particularly important when only parts of a multilayer paint system, for example only a topcoat, not a primer, must be removed.
The very short laser pulses remove the coatings so quickly that the surrounding material absorbs very little heat and when setting the correct radius parameters, there is no risk of damaging the material to be cleaned. No solvents, chemical or abrasive products are used, the process is environmentally friendly and operators are not exposed to harmful risk factors. Only laser and electricity are required for cleaning.
